Volcanic Eruption

“When you fall in love, it erupts like a volcano and then it subsides. And when it subsides you have to work out whether your roots have become so intertwined that it is inconceivable that you could separate. Love is like that. Love is what is left when being in love has burned away.”

–From the film “Captain Correlli’s Mandolin”
We saw this quote in Linda Savage’s blog.  We have experienced the volcanic eruption and its subsidence in other relationships and together.  While we enjoy the euphoria of “falling in love,” what really matters to us is the deeper, longer-lasting intimacy that results from continuously and consciously opening into more vulnerability as the relationship matures.  Volcanic eruptions can certainly continue on the basis of the deeper intimacy.
